While many of the germs that cause this misery can circulate throughout the year, scientists think that the winter surge of flu and cold activity may be because we spend more time indoors. The cold, dry air may also weaken our defenses.
The development comes at a time when China is reportedly battling a surge in respiratory illness with flu-like symptoms- Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), sparking global concerns. Posts on social media purportedly show hospitals and crematoriums overwhelmed in China amid a rapid rise in infections. The HMPV virus is most likely to affect elderly people or children.
However, China has downplayed the surge in infections and has said that the country is safe to travel. Several cases of HMPV have also been reported in many Asian countries such as Hong Kong and India.
