Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) has filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court of India seeking a stay on the constituency delimitation process. The party filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court on Tuesday demanding a stay on the Election Commission of India's move. The draft delimitation proposal published recently has evoked protest in several places.BJP leaders from Barak Valley met the chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
There is resentment among the party leaders regarding the draft proposal. The leaders held a meeting with Urban Development Minister Ashok Singhal, who is also guardian minister and vented their grievances. Sarma recently said there is no resentment in Barak Valley and the people of the Valley have expressed gratitude towards him for the delimitation process.
“I said that they must express their gratitude to the Election Commission of India. Residents of Hailakandi had expressed their gratitude and said that this will protect Assam’s interest.” The Election Commission of India (ECI) published a draft delimitation proposal for Assam suggestions and Objections are invited till July 11, 2023. The draft proposes a parliamentary seat named Kaziranga.
The number of Assembly seats has been retained at 126 and the number of Lok Sabha seats at 14. In the draft proposal 19 Assembly seats and 2 Parliamentary seats reserved for STs, 9 Assembly seats and one Parliamentary seat for SCs. The number of Assembly seats in West Karbi Anglong district has been suggested by the EC to be increased by one, and in Bodoland districts by three.
