However, both the movies have created an uproar in Japan, all thanks to a meme. The Japanese chapter of Warner Bros condemned the ‘Barbenheimer’ meme and demanded the producers of both films to apologise. The meme is a viral fan-made poster shared by a film discussion Twitter account @DiscussionFilm.
The poster features ‘Oppenheimer’ star Cillian Murphy carrying ‘Barbie’ leading lady Margot Robbie on his back, as nuclear flames erupt in the background. In response to the post, the @barbiethemovie account replied: “It’s going to be a summer to remember.” The post invited the ire of many Japanese netizens, as it reopened a lot of wounds and reinstated the sore subject of the US unleashing two atomic bombs Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the Second World War. Many Japanese Twitter users severely condemned the post.
“Me as a Japanese, Barbenheimer is NOT FUNNY AT ALL. In 1945, many Japanese died by Atomic bomb. American people believe that was correct to end the war, but was it? Can you say the same thing if your country’s people were killed a lot by an atomic bomb?” wrote a Twitter user.
“You all severely lack intelligence, empathy, and humility. Who in this world can laugh at this meme? Russia? America? Or is it the victorious country in WW2?” wrote another aggrieved Japanese. “We consider it extremely regrettable that the official account of the American headquarters for the movie Barbie reacted to the social media postings of ‘Barbenheimer’ fans,” Warner Bros.
