Omar Abdullah on Saturday said Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council elections in Kargil on October 4 is an important opportunity for people here to express their opinion and convey whether they accept or reject the decisions of August 5, 2019.
The National Conference leader addressed an election rally in Kargil where he was not allowed to take the names of his party candidates fighting election in the wake of an order issued by the local authorities.
The elections for the LAHDC in Kargil will be held on October 4 and the counting of votes will be carried out on October 8.
“On October 4, it is not just an election for the Hill Council. This is the first time you are getting a chance to raise your voice since 2019…the whole world will be watching what the people of Kargil will have to say and what message you want to send across…Will you accept the decision of August 5, 2019 or reject it completely,” said Abdullah, whose security was not allowed to cross zero point, a border point between the newly formed union territories of J&K and Ladakh.
The BJP led government passed the J&K Reorganisation Bill on August 5 and 6 in the parliament through which they abrogated the special status of J&K and downgraded the erstwhile state into the two union territories of J&K and Ladakh. People in Leh district of Ladakh had initially welcomed the decision, but Kargil district protested against it.
Now, the people in both Leh and Kargil have joined hands to demand statehood for Ladakh and implementation of sixth schedule in the region.
“We call ourselves the mother of democracy, where did this democracy go when you took the decision regarding Kargil in 2019. Ladakh has suffered huge losses after 2019.
