cyber-attacks in recent times on the critical water infrastructure in the US has exposed its gaps in cyber security. These attacks carried out allegedly by Russia, China and Iran have added to the stress on the system as well as lowered the public confidence. It has been reported that the US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan has also issued a note to all stake holders to take note and work towards stepping up security on various networks which are connected to the water infrastructure. There is an increasing tendency to use AI in carrying out various cyber-crimes.
Many of these attacks, for example in the city of Wichita in the state of Kansas, target the water metering, billing system and payment processing systems. While AI is being used in various cyber-crimes, in the case of the US, it has been reported that the hackers are using some old school methods which include hacking into systems with a weak password, unchanged password, not separating the networks. This is being done through phishing and social engineering.

When the Environmental Protection Agency inspected various water infrastructure facilities, it found that 70% of the water systems are not compliant with the guidelines issued under the Safe Drinking Water Act. Air gap systems that separate two IT systems have not been used in the case of these projects.
The hackers are also purpose
