Every year, Children’s Day is observed on November 14 across India. This day also coincides with the birth anniversary of Pandit. Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister. Nehru was often fondly referred to, as ‘Chacha Nehru’. He was known for his love of kids and his efforts to further the cause of child rights as well as nurture and support children and young adults. He launched the Children’s Film Society in 1955 to promote entertainment geared towards kids.
Children’s Day is celebrated with great fanfare at several schools and institutions in India. Cultural programmes are held.
Children's Day was originally introduced as Flower Day in 1948. The concept was floated by the Indian Council of Child Welfare to support the rights and empowerment of underprivileged children.
In 1951, VM Kulkarni, a United Nations Social Welfare Fellow suggested Pandit Nehru's birthday be celebrated as Flag Day, to enable NGOs focused on child welfare to collect more funds. Nehru gave the initiate his blessing and the first Children's Day was celebrated in 1954.
