In a new Esquire profile on Anthony Mackie, who is set to lead Captain America: Brave New World, Evans, 43, dismissed reports claiming he would reprise his role as Steve Rogers in 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday.
«That’s not true,» Evans said bluntly when asked about the speculation, adding that these kinds of rumors resurface every few years since he last played the character in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
His stance? He’s done—and he’s happy about it.
«I’ve just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no—happily retired!» Evans quipped.
Mackie, 46, who officially took up the Captain America mantle in Disney+’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, also weighed in on the speculation.
He told Esquire that he had recently spoken to Evans but hadn’t heard anything about a comeback.
«I talked to Chris a few weeks ago and it wasn’t on the table then,» Mackie revealed.
Not wanting to leave things to chance, Mackie decided to ask Evans directly.
«I was like, ‘You know, they said they’re bringing everyone back for Doomsday. Are you coming back?’» Mackie recalled.
