A new strain of the (infamous) Covid-19 variant has been found. India’s first case of JN.1, a sub-variant of the virus has been recorded in Kerala. Although the state’s health minister Veena George assured that it was not a “cause for concern,” it has left people alarmed.
According to reports, the sub-variant was discovered on December 16, as part of an ongoing routine surveillance activity conducted by the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG). It was detected in a 79-year-old woman.
The sub-variant was first discovered at Luxembourg. It is said to be related to the Pirola variant (BA 2.86), which is said to be an offshoot of the Omicron sub-variant.
The symptoms caused by this sub-variant are quite similar to those caused by Covid-19. It can manifest in fever, sore throat, runny noses, etc. In certain cases, it may cause gastrointestinal problems.
In an interview with theTimes Of India, Dr Neeraj Gupta, Senior Consultant of Pulmonology at the Marengo Asia Hospital at Gurugram revealed that this sub-variant does not seem to be life-threatening as it doesn't cause high mortality rates or severe sickness.
However, since it contains several mutations in the spike, it can easily bypass our immune defenses. So it’s highly contagious.
