Vijay Hazare is very famous. His contributions to the sport and his remarkable innings are etched in memory. And now, a piece of his legacy is under threat as the iconic "Pushpakoot," once the residence of the late cricket legend in Vadodara, faces the prospect of demolition, a TOI report stated.
Back in 1947-48, during India's first-ever tour of Australia, Hazare showcased his batting prowess by scoring an impressive 145 in the second innings, while six of his teammates failed to make any mark.
Fast forward to 2023, and the fate of this historic bungalow hangs in the balance, reminiscent of those uncertain moments on the cricket pitch.
«Pushpakoot» holds a special place in the hearts of cricket enthusiasts and heritage aficionados alike. Located in Vadodara, a city that has nurtured numerous international cricketers, one would naturally assume that this architectural gem would be preserved for generations to come. However, the roads and buildings department has set the wheels in motion for its demolition, despite pleas from those who wish to safeguard this heritage.
Sameer Khera, vice-president of Heritage Trust, expressed his disappointment, saying, «The building is such an important part of our history.
It is unfortunate that it is being pulled down. We have requested the authorities to preserve it. On the one hand, we are talking about making a heritage square in Vadodara and then such heritage structures are being demolished.»
Constructed in the year 1902, «Pushpakoot» served as Hazare's residence from 1940 to 1976.
