Pennsylvania State Police have confirmed that Danelo Cavalcante, the escaped inmate convicted of a heinous crime, has been captured after an intense two-week manhunt. Here, we provide a timeline of the events leading to his capture.
On August 16, just two weeks before his escape, a jury convicted Danelo Cavalcante of first-degree murder in the killing of his former girlfriend, Deborah Brandão. This conviction, in Pennsylvania, carries a mandatory life sentence without parole. The tragic story revealed that Cavalcante and Brandão, once neighbors and a couple for about a year and a half, had a relationship marked by initial kindness that gradually soured. Brandão's sister, Sarah, shared that Cavalcante became «extremely jealous» and underwent a drastic personality change when he consumed alcohol. A probable cause affidavit revealed that Brandão had filed a protection order against Cavalcante in 2020.
Tragically, Cavalcante murdered Brandão in April 2021, stabbing her 38 times in front of her two young children, who are now under Sarah's care. Additionally, Cavalcante was wanted in Brazil for a 2017 homicide, a motive for his brutal act, according to prosecutors.
Thursday, August 31: The Escape
Cavalcante executed his daring escape from Chester County Prison, partially captured on surveillance cameras. The footage depicted him navigating a narrow space between two walls in the prison's exercise yard, using a «crab-walking» technique to ascend out of view. He then sprinted across a rooftop, scaled a fence, and negotiated razor wire to achieve his escape.
