Terminal 1 (T1) of Delhi Airport when a canopy in the old departure forecourt collapsed during heavy rainfall, resulting in one fatality and injuries to several others. The structure in question was built by another company back in 2009, L&T said, adding that its association with T1 was through an expansion project initiated in 2019 at the request of Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL). This expansion project, which extended T1 by approximately 110 meters, was completed and commissioned in March 2024, it said. L&T confirmed that the collapse had no impact on this newly extended portion of T1.
Following the collapse, the Civil Aviation Ministry has engaged structural engineers from IIT Delhi to assess the incident. The detailed technical study of Terminal 1 is anticipated to conclude within a month, after which a decision will be made regarding the resumption of operations there. Currently, all flights originally scheduled from T1 have been relocated to Terminal 2 (T2) and Terminal 3 (T3), ensuring minimal disruption to flight schedules.
