Delhi Police has filled around 600 FIRs every day under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), arresting about 22 individuals daily, reported ToI.
Between July 1 and July 10, the police officials have lodged nearly 6,334 FIRs, including 1,074 offline FIRs, 1,059 e-motor vehicle theft FIRs, and 4,201 e-property theft FIRs. Among these, 178 cases saw resolution, leading to the apprehension of 225 suspects.
«Thefts were registered more frequently, followed by snatchings, accidents, hurt and burglary,» said a police official on FIRs under new laws. Additionally, 147 FIRs were filed daily under the former IPC laws, with 1,471 FIRs filed from July 1 to July 10, consisting of 383 offline, 135 e-motor vehicle theft, and 953 e-property theft cases. Of these, 32 cases were resolved, resulting in 45 arrests.
BNS has introduced harsher sentences for offenses such as vehicle theft, which can now carry up to seven years in prison. Meanwhile, police are working to create awareness about the new laws. “The laws are people-friendly. Whoever comes to the station, we tell them about the new laws and under which section their case will be registered. We have also visited markets and some other areas to create awareness,” said the officer.
The Delhi Police continue efforts to educate the public on these changes, ensuring that everyone understands the procedures and implications of the new legal framework. This proactive approach is intended to enhance the legal process and improve overall efficiency in dealing with crimes.
