Aamir Khan is regarded as one of Bollywood’s most exceptional actors, having delivered numerous hits throughout his career. Among them is Taare Zameen Par, a film that not only marked his directorial debut but also became India’s official entry for the 81st Academy Awards in 2009. However, few people know that Aamir was not the original choice for the role of Ram Shankar Nikumbh.

Initially, Akshaye Khanna was selected to play the character, but circumstances led to Aamir taking on the role instead. During an interview with Sit with Hitlist, Akshaye Khanna revealed that filmmaker Amol Gupte had wanted to cast him but could not because of the Sarfarosh actor. Amol, who did not personally know Akshaye Khanna at the time, asked Aamir Khan to call his Dil Chahta Hai co-staar up. However, before Amol could share the script with him, Aamir asked him to narrate the story to him first. Captivated by the script, Aamir decided immediately after the narration that he wanted to be a part of the film, ultimately leading him to take on the role.
Akshaye Khanna stated, «He approached Aamir because he was a friend of Aamir's and said, 'You know I really want to narrate this story to Akshaye, and I don't know him, you just worked with him in Dil Chahata Hai, so can you call him and tell him I want to narrate him a script.' So, Aamir, being Aamir, said, 'I can't recommend a script unless I hear it first, so make me hear it, and if I like it, I'll tell Akshaye,' and he liked it so much that he ended up doing it.»
