Hwang Dong-hyuk, the mastermind behind the globally acclaimed Squid Game, has revealed that his return to the series for Season 2 was motivated largely by unresolved financial issues with Netflix.
Despite the show’s monumental success, which brought Netflix an estimated $900 million in revenue, Hwang disclosed that he received only an upfront fee, lacking back-end compensation or residuals for his work.
In a recent interview, he explained his primary reason for resuming the project, shedding light on the financial hardships he faced following Squid Game's runaway success, as mentioned in a report by Screenrant.
Speaking with the BBC, Hwang shared his discontent with Netflix’s compensation model, which paid him a modest sum to create the first season of Squid Game, yet did not include residual earnings for the show’s success.
Hwang said, “Even though the first series was such a huge global success, honestly, I didn’t make much.”
