Digantara commissions commercial space surveillance satellite, SCOT
Digantara commissioned the world’s first commercial space-based space surveillance satellite, SCOT (space camera for object tracking), on Saturday. Launched aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-12 mission on January 14, SCOT aims to safeguard and manage Earth’s orbits.
The satellite was successfully commissioned, achieving first light on Saturday. SCOT captured its inaugural image of the city of Buenos Aires while passing over South America.
On January 17, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said on X, “Kudos to Indian Space startup Digantara on the success of Mission SCOT. This is an important contribution of the growing Indian Space industry towards enhancing Space situational awareness.”
SCOT is designed to track and monitor objects as small as 5 cm, with a high revisit rate for frequent, precise observations of orbital activity. As space becomes increasingly congested, this capability is essential for mitigating collision risks and promoting sustainable space operations by providing accurate and dependable data to satellite operators and regulatory bodies.
“SCOT’s first image is a technical milestone in safeguarding Earth’s orbits for generations to come,” said Anirudh Sharma, chief executive of Digantara.
