Early signs indicate a likely increase in enrolments in Chinese universities for the upcoming academic sessions, said executives at education consultancies. Medical aspirants, who have historically dominated the student flow to China, are expected to return in large numbers. Meanwhile, engineering and artificial intelligence-related courses are gaining traction, with the consultancies witnessing a surge in queries in recent days after Chinese startup Deepseek leaped onto the AI stage.
“Engineering and technology students also show interest, particularly in areas like AI and robotics where China is a global leader; now more so with the rise of Deepseek,” LeverageEdu founder Akshay Chaturvedi said. “We saw a record increase in the number of students asking about AI courses in China last week, a massive 500% increase in queries on the platform.”

Rahul Subramaniam, cofounder of Athena Education, echoed this sentiment. “Engineering students, in particular, are drawn to prestigious institutions such as Peking University and Tsinghua University, renowned for their exceptional engineering programmes,” he said.
