Donald Trump on Friday announced that he will soon sign an executive order to end the Joe Biden-led previous administration's plan to ban plastic straws in the federal government.

“I will be signing an Executive Order next week ending the ridiculous Biden push for Paper Straws, which don’t work,” Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social. “BACK TO PLASTIC!”
This is not the first time Trump has spoken out about plastic straws. During his 2020 re-election campaign, his team sold red plastic straws with the word «Trump» written on them, directly challenging the move towards paper straws, which he criticised as ineffective.
The move follows a national strategy introduced by former president Joe Biden in November last year to tackle plastic pollution. As part of this plan, Biden's administration had called for a reduction in single-use plastics, including plastic straws, and encouraged sustainable alternatives. This aligned with wider environmental goals to cut pollution and lessen the reliance on non-biodegradable materials.
In 2019, a statement on Trump’s campaign website read, “Liberal paper straws don’t work. Stand with President Trump and buy your recyclable straws today.”
