The Panama Canal is an 82-kilometer (51-mile) artificial waterway that connects the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, cutting through Panama. This strategic route saves ships thousands of miles and weeks of travel around the southern tip of South America, significantly reducing shipping times. For example, ships traveling from Los Angeles to New York save about 8,000 miles (roughly 22 days of travel) by using the canal instead of taking the longer route around the Strait of Magellan, located off the southern tip of South America.
