Earth Day 2025: Why is the day celebrated; what are the major events
Earth Day was first celebrated by Gaylord Nelson, who sought to unite the various environmental movements across the US.
Earth Day History
Nelson organised the maiden Earth Day with help from an erstwhile Harvard graduate student named Denis Hayes. The national celebration managed to draw as many as 20 million people to events across the US. Twenty years later, in 1990, Hayes organised a worldwide celebration to mark the occasion of Earth Day.
That year saw over 200 million people, spread across over 140 countries, participate in Earth Day events. The observance was formalised internationally in 2009, when a resolution passed by the United Nations General Assembly designated April 22 as International Mother Earth Day.
The spirit of the UN resolution lies in recognizing the Earth and its ecosystems as humanity's common home. The UN celebrates the annual observance of the Harmony with Nature initiative. The initiative provides a platform for global sustainable development that celebrates annually an interactive dialogue on International Mother Earth Day.

Earth Day 2025 Theme
The theme for this year's Earth Day is 'Our Power, Our Planet'. It will aim to rally mass support for the widespread adoption of renewable energy. Another core goal of Earth Day 2025 will be to strive for the tripling of global clean energy generation by 2030. In general, Earth Day is an occasion for environmental advocates to raise awareness among the masses about the perils of climate change and how collective action can slow down the phenomenon.
