candidates applying for the Common University Entrance Test — Undergraduate (CUET-UG) 2024 has seen a significant drop this year, with a 1.5 lakh decrease in the total number of applicants.
Despite this decrease, there has been a rise in the number of subjects opted for. This year, candidates have opted for double the number of tests, with an average of 4.3 subjects chosen per applicant, up from 2.3, the previous year.
Applicants have opted for a total of 57.6 lakh tests, compared to 28 lakh previously.
The popularity of certain subjects has soared, with nearly 75% of CUET-UG aspirants opting for the English exam and 62% for the General test. Subjects within the sciences and language domains have seen a surge in applications, with English surpassing the 10 lakh mark. However, there has been a decline in interest in commerce, social sciences, and humanities.
Despite the overall decrease in the number of candidates, there has been an increase in female participation, with nearly a 3% rise recorded this year. The total number of registrations for the common entrance test stands at over 13.4 lakh, a slight decrease from the previous year's 14.9 lakh registrations.
«Anything above 10 lakh is a big number. This is a small variation, which happens in such a large examination and 13.4 lakh anyways is a big number,» said UGC chairperson M Jagadesh Kumar.
