On February 10, 2025, the SBA issued termination notices to several probationary employees. However, later that same day, the agency sent an email stating that the notices were sent in error and that the employees were not actually fired. Just when things seemed to settle, the next day, February 11, some employees received a new notice confirming their termination, citing failure to meet federal employment standards.
The sudden and conflicting messages caused chaos and uncertainty among the affected workers. According to Bloomberg, the firings were part of a broader effort to reduce the federal workforce.

The incident at the Small Business Administration appears to be a result of a rushed downsizing policy. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) had instructed federal agencies to terminate all probationary employees, leading to widespread layoffs across various government departments, including Veterans Affairs, Education, and the SBA. Reports suggest that over 200,000 federal workers are at risk of losing their jobs as part of these workforce cuts.
