Ghost guns are homemade firearms assembled from kits purchased online. These kits are often sold without background checks and lack serial numbers, making the weapons untraceable.
Ghost guns have existed since the 1990s but gained popularity in recent years, especially among criminals. According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), law enforcement recovered around 45,000 privately made firearms during investigations from 2016 to 2021. The number of recoveries increased annually during this period, reaching over 19,000 in 2021.
