Guardians of hope: A year-long journey of the Indian Army towards peace in Manipur
The Indian Army has been present in Manipur since the early days of independence, working to address security concerns. In May 2023, violence erupted in the region due to deep-rooted grievances, ethnic tensions, and external influences, leading to instability. Over the past year, the Army has been committed to restoring peace and normalcy, facing many challenges along the way.
When violence broke out, the Indian Army quickly mobilized its troops. They conducted numerous rescue and evacuation missions, saving over 33,516 people caught in the crossfire. The Army provided humanitarian aid to over 1,493 individuals and offered shelter to more than 3,151 people affected by the violence. They also organized 25 peace initiatives, fostering dialogue among 795 local leaders to seek reconciliation.
The Indian Army extended its efforts to healthcare, conducting 75 medical camps that provided essential services to over 13,074 people, including elders, women, and children. They distributed relief materials to 1,695 locals, ensuring no one was left behind during the crisis. The Army also supported education by assisting 891 students and providing stationery to around 1,092 children.
Despite the turmoil, the Army contributed to infrastructure development in Manipur. They built roads, bridges, shelters, water tanks, and other essential facilities, improving connectivity and fostering economic growth in the region.
The Indian Army maintained vigilance by conducting thousands of area domination patrols and combing operations. They also trained local security forces and police, enhancing their capabilities.
