Harris or Trump — Who is favouring skills over college degrees for federal jobs?
Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump may disagree on numerous issues, but they’ve both recognized the value of apprenticeships and trade schools as viable alternatives to traditional four-year college degrees.
Both political figures are advocating for policies that encourage young Americans to pursue these routes to well-paying jobs, as mentioned in a report by USA Today.
Recently, Kamala Harris announced her intent to reduce college degree requirements for federal jobs and urged private-sector employers to do the same if elected. Speaking in the working-class town of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Harris emphasized the need to recognize the value of different career pathways beyond the conventional college route.
Former President Donald Trump, in a similar vein, has championed alternative career routes, building on his 2020 executive order that prioritized skills over degrees in federal hiring.
A Shift in Attitudes Toward Higher Education
The bipartisan push comes at a time when public opinion on higher education has shifted. College tuition has skyrocketed in recent years, and the benefits of a degree aren’t as clear-cut as they once were.
