Trump and Vice President Harris had accepted the guidelines for their first debate, which is scheduled for next week. The Trump vs. Harris debate, which will take place on September 10 on ABC News, will be the first since President Biden withdrew from the contest in July. Following a dispute between the two campaigns regarding whether or not the other candidate's microphone should be muted while they speak, each candidate agreed to the rules.
Although ABC announced on Wednesday that microphones will only be live during a candidate's turn to speak and will be muted during their opponent's turn to speak, the vice president's team pushed to change the rule to keep them unmuted. During the June CNN debate, President Biden and Trump followed the same set of microphone guidelines. The debate next week, which will be held in Philadelphia at the National Constitution Center without an audience, will be mediated by David Muir and Linsey Davis of ABC. There will be two commercial breaks during the debate's 90-minute duration.
