As officials in his administration rush to catch up with his “improbable plan,” sources familiar with the matter have said that Trump's idea developed over time and seemed to have originated with the president himself.
Trump discussed his plan at a joint news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday evening.
What led to this idea?
According to a CNN report, officials indicated that the suggestion was aimed at taking action on an issue Trump saw as stagnant, particularly as other nations have failed to offer viable solutions to the conflict that erupted on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-backed militants attacked southern Israel, killing nearly 1,200 people and taking over 250 hostages.
A Middle East adviser told CNN that they were unaware of the idea until Trump raised it during Tuesday's news conference, describing themselves as stunned.
