US President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose 25 per cent tariffs on goods imported from the European Union, stating that the trade relationship between the two sides has been unfair to the United States.

But the move could lead to higher costs for American consumers and prompt swift retaliatory measures from the EU’s 27 member nations.
Trump stated that the tariffs would apply to cars and all other things and suggested that the EU had taken advantage of the US by restricting American cars and agricultural products while enjoying unrestricted access to the US market.
The European Union strongly condemned the proposal, stating that it would respond firmly and immediately against what it described as unjustified tariffs.
In 2024, the US imported $605.8 billion worth of goods from the EU, according to the Office of the US Trade Representative.
