cricket is set to make a remarkable comeback to the Olympic Games after a hiatus of 128 years. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed on Monday that cricket, along with sports like baseball/softball, lacrosse, squash, and flag football, will be featured in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
During the IOC's 141st session, the iconic status of star Indian batter Virat Kohli was evident as his name was mentioned in connection with the decision to include cricket in the Olympics.
Known globally for his impressive record of over 25,000 international runs and 77 centuries, Kohli has earned the admiration of sporting enthusiasts worldwide. Even non-cricketing legends recognize his stature as a legendary sportsman.
Niccolo Campriani, the Sports Director of the Los Angeles 2028 Organising Committee, highlighted Kohli's massive social media following of 340 million, surpassing the combined numbers of other renowned athletes such as LeBron James, Tom Brady, and Tiger Woods.
Campriani emphasized that having cricket in the Olympics is a win-win situation for LA28, the IOC, and the cricket community, as it will showcase the sport on a global stage and expand its reach to untapped communities of athletes and fans.
The decision to include cricket in the Olympic Games was proposed by the Organising Committee of the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 and accepted during the IOC session held in Mumbai. Cricket made its sole appearance at the 1900 Paris Olympics, where Great Britain emerged as the victorious team.
