The weaver, originally from Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh, recalled how he migrated to Hyderabad in search of a livelihood. “I don’t know my age. We never counted birthdays, just the seasons, festivals, and the baskets we made,” he shared. With no land or job opportunities in his village, he turned to basket weaving, a skill that soon became his means of survival.
He and his family source raw materials such as rattan, bamboo, and coconut leaves from the West Godavari region. Setting up makeshift stalls near Nampally Exhibition Grounds at MJ Market, they weave and sell baskets, wedding decorations, and hanging pots. “Some days, we earn well. Some days, we don’t. But we never complain,” he said, emphasizing his belief in hard work and honesty. “If you don’t have money, do small work anywhere, but never steal or deceive. Hands that work will always find a way to earn.”
