Telugu community, Sandhya Reddy, hailing from Telangana with roots in Hyderabad, has secured the position of deputy mayor in Strathfield Council, Sydney, Australia. This significant election took place during the Strathfield council meeting held on September 5, where Karen Pensabane was elected as mayor, and Sandhya, affectionately known as Sandy, assumed the role of deputy mayor.
NRI coordinator Mahesh Bigala expressed immense pride in Sandhya's achievement, highlighting that it's the first time an Indian-Australian has been elected as deputy mayor.
The Telugu community welcomed this milestone with open arms.
The Strathfield council officially acknowledged Sandhya Reddy's election, stating, «The council is pleased to announce that councillor Sandy Reddy is elected as deputy mayor. We would like to congratulate Sandy Reddy on her election as deputy mayor.» Notably, Sandhya had secured her seat on the Strathfield council as an independent candidate in December 2021.
In her victory speech, Sandhya Reddy expressed her unwavering commitment to serving the people of Strathfield.
Her journey to this remarkable achievement began in Hyderabad, where she pursued her education before migrating to Australia following her marriage in 1991. Originating from Khairatabad, Sandhya attended Stanley College for her Intermediate education and furthered her academic pursuits by completing a law course and obtaining a postgraduate degree from Osmania University.
Throughout her career, she worked diligently as an immigration lawyer, aiding countless individuals in navigating the complex immigration landscape.
