The labor force grew by 2.2 million people last month, the most in data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics back to 1948, and most of that came from foreign-born workers. However, because the 2025 data incorporate new population estimates, they aren’t directly comparable to prior months.
Immigrants were also a key driver of job growth in 2024, Friday’s report showed. The number of employed foreign-born workers grew by 1.9 million in the year through January, compared to a gain of 766,000 for the native-born population.
The BLS defines the labor force as the total number of people age 16 and older who are either employed or actively seeking work. The data showed that the increase in the size of the workforce was entirely due to people who are employed, as the number of unemployed people fell.

Immigrants — legal and undocumented — currently account for one in five US workers, a record in data going back nearly two decades. The BLS consider those born outside of the US to parents who aren’t citizens as foreign-born, regardless of immigration status.
