Indian Embassy in Damascus remains operational and is in constant communication with Indian nationals in Syria, sources confirmed. As the violence in Syria escalates, the embassy continues to provide support to the 90 Indian nationals in the country, ensuring their safety amidst the conflict.
In light of the deteriorating situation, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a travel advisory on December 8, urging all Indian nationals to avoid travelling to Syria. The advisory advised those already in the country to leave via the earliest available commercial flights. The MEA has been proactive in providing guidance to ensure the safety of its citizens, advising them to remain in touch with the Indian Embassy in Damascus.
The embassy’s emergency helpline number is +963 993385973, which is also accessible via WhatsApp. Additionally, Indians can contact the embassy by email at hoc.damascus@mea.gov.in. The advisory stressed the importance of observing extreme caution, especially for those unable to leave Syria, advising them to restrict their movements to the minimum.
The Indian government has confirmed that around 90 Indian nationals are currently in Syria, with 14 working for various United Nations organisations. The MEA spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, assured the public, «We are closely following the situation. Our mission remains in close contact with our nationals for their safety and security.»
