Syrian rebels have taken control of the Saydnaya military prison near Damascus, freeing inmates held under brutal conditions. This event marks a significant turn in Syria’s prolonged conflict as the Assad regime collapses.
Rebel forces liberated Saydnaya prison during their takeover of Damascus. This prison, notorious for severe torture and executions, has been a grim symbol of the Assad regime’s rule. Videos shared online show inmates celebrating their release after years of confinement. Among those freed were women and young children including toddlers.

Reports from Saydnaya highlight the brutal practices within the prison. Human rights organizations have documented frequent executions and torture. Amnesty International estimates that 13,000 individuals were killed in the prison between 2011 and 2016.
Despite the liberation, tens of thousands of prisoners remain missing. Many are believed to be held in hidden underground cells. The Syrian civil defense group, known as the White Helmets, has deployed specialized teams to locate these detainees. Access to certain areas of the prison remains restricted due to electronic locks, and rebel forces are appealing to former guards for assistance.
