Acclaimed filmmaker Ezra Edelman, best known for his work on O.J.: Made in America, had been crafting an in-depth, never-before-seen look into Prince’s extraordinary career and complex personal life. The documentary promised an unfiltered exploration of the enigmatic artist, featuring interviews with those closest to him.
However, the project took a controversial turn when serious allegations surfaced in the footage. Prince’s former lover Jill Jones claimed he physically assaulted her one night in 1984, punching her «over and over.» Another ex, Susannah Melvoin, accused the Purple Rain singer of controlling and emotionally manipulating her, isolating her from loved ones and monitoring her every move.
Prince’s estate, now under new management, swiftly intervened after viewing an early cut of the documentary. Attorney L. Londell McMillan, a key administrator of the estate, reportedly demanded 17 pages of revisions, arguing that the documentary unfairly tarnished the late musician’s legacy. Despite some edits, Edelman refused to sanitize key elements of the film, ultimately leading to its complete shutdown.
