Jeff Bezos shifts Washington Post’s editorial focus: Here’s why Elon Musk backs Amazon founder's decision
Jeff Bezos has announced a major shift in The Washington Post’s editorial stance, declaring that the publication’s opinion pages will focus exclusively on "personal liberties" and "free markets." The move has already led to the resignation of opinion editor David Shipley. The change has divided opinions, with Tesla CEO Elon Musk among those publicly supporting Bezos’ decision.
“Bravo, @JeffBezos!” Musk posted on X, the social media platform he owns, in response to Bezos' announcement.
A Fundamental Change in Editorial Direction
In an internal email to staff, later shared publicly, Bezos outlined his vision for The Post’s opinion pages. “We are going to be writing every day in support and defence of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets. We’ll cover other topics too, of course, but viewpoints opposing those pillars will be left to be published by others,” he wrote.
Explaining his reasoning, Bezos said that newspapers once played a key role in offering broad-based opinions, but “today, the internet does that job.” He added, “I am of America and for America, and proud to be so. I'm confident that free markets and personal liberties are right for America. I also believe these viewpoints are underserved in the current market of ideas and news opinion.”
