Tokayev has recently elaborated on the country’s foreign policy approach for 2024, saying that Astana will continue a constructive and balanced foreign policy, taking into account the national interests of the state.
He pointed out that the country in 2024 will chair several international organizations at once, most notably the Organization of Turkic States, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, the Collective Security Treaty Organization, and the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia.
The SCO Summit that is expected to see participation of the Indian PM will be hosted in Astana in mid-2024.
The Kazakh President also reflected on the tragic events of January 2022 and pointed out that as a nation, Kazakhstan’s citizens collectively navigated through this crisis, stood their ground, and emerged even stronger.
“I have thought long and continue to ponder over these questions. In my view, the tragic events in January resulted from long-standing unresolved socio-economic problems and a general stagnation that evolved into the degradation of both the government and society. It was evident, as they say, to the naked eye,” said Tokayev in an interview published by the Egemen Qazaqstan newspaper in Kazakhstan.
“After my election as President in 2019, a course was set towards the democratization of the political system, the liberalization of public life, and the de-monopolization of the economy,” he said. “I will be frank: this new course faced sharp opposition from influential figures who perceived it as a threat to the deeply rooted state of affairs in the country and their privileged status within the power structures.”
