Pavement band drummer Gary Young has passed away at 70. He was the original drummer of the famous indie-rock band, and appeared on their famous debut, 'Slanted and Enchanted'. Gary Young was a drummer, producer, and studio owner. Pavement frontman Stephen Malkmus confirmed the death of Gary Young on social media on Thursday, August 17. “Gary Young passed on today. Gary’s pavement drums were ‘one take and hit record’…. Nailed it so well,” he wrote.
History of PavementFrontman Stephen Malkmus and guitarist Scott “Spiral Stairs” Kannberg formed the band named Pavement in 1989 in Stockton, California. In the same year, the band recorded their first EP at a studio called Louder Than You Think in Stockton. The studio was owned by Gary Young, who was not a band member then but joined them soon as the first drummer. Pavement’s debut album Slanted and Enchanted in 1992 was recorded at Gary Young’s studio. Bob Nastanovich had once said to Rolling Stone that “Gary deserves a lot of credit” for the debut album. “The whole thing was really brought together by him. Pavement was really fortunate to stumble upon this guy,” he said. Bob recalled that Young’s studio had a 16-track machine, but one of the tracks didn’t work, so Slanted is “probably one of the greatest albums ever made on a 15-track machine”. “You could completely relax and be yourself there (in Young’s studio),” Bob added. Matador Records, which released the iconic album Slanted and Enchanted, posted a tribute to Gary Young on social media. «We were exceedingly lucky to know the amazing human, drummer, producer, and solo artist Gary Young. Much love today to his family, friends and bandmates,» wrote the record label.
