The surprising upsets and the biggest losers
Leading the NDA charge was N Chandrababu Naidu, former chief minister of the erstwhile undivided state of Andhra Pradesh, whose Telugu Desam Party (TDP), which swept 16 out of 25 seats in Andhra Pradesh. The BJP, which had contested six seats in the state, won three seats. Actor-politician Pawan Kalyan’s Janasena Party won two seats. The incumbent YSRCP managed to win just four seats.
The Congress-led INDIA alliance fared much worse, failing to open an account in the state, repeating its performance of the 2019 polls. Telangana, however, witnessed a close contest between the BJP and the Congress, with both parties winning eight seats each.
The Congress, which had dominated the state assembly polls in December last year by bagging 65 seats out of 119, was banking on its pre-poll guarantees to maintain the winning momentum. The BJP, on the other hand, was looking to the Modi factor and defections from the BRS to turn its fortunes in the southern state.
