Pew Research Center released a comprehensive study exploring the views of Chinese Americans on China and other countries. The study revealed that Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea were viewed favorably by the majority of Chinese Americans. However, only 41% of Chinese Americans had a favorable view of China, while 54% held an unfavorable opinion of their ancestral homeland.
Survey FindingsThe study also found that Chinese Americans' views of China were influenced by their place of birth. Those born in China tended to have more positive views of their homeland compared to those born in the U.S. This complex outlook on China stems from a mix of pride in their heritage and culture, but also concerns over the country's human rights record and growing global influence. Chinese Americans expressed greater skepticism towards China compared to the general public. They were more likely to believe that China does not respect personal freedoms (83% vs. 70%) and considered it a threat to the U.S. (65% vs. 54%). To gather this data, Pew Research Center conducted an extensive survey of Asian Americans, including Chinese Americans, in May 2023. The survey encompassed various aspects, such as experiences, opinions, and demographics, and represented the largest nationally representative sample focused on Asian Americans to date.
