She emphasized that while marriage often involves sharing your life with someone, it’s essential not to lose who you are in the process. «Independent rakho baba. Jo tera hai voh tera hai, jo mera hai voh mera hai,» she shared. This statement, which roughly translates to «What is yours is mine, and what is mine is mine,» underscores her belief that both partners should respect each other's individuality.
Malaika further elaborated, «It’s good that you’re doing things together but that doesn’t mean you kind of give up your entire identity and take on someone else’s. As it is you’re taking on somebody else’s last name, right? So I think the least you can do is hang on to your own bank account.» According to her, keeping one's finances separate is a fundamental part of maintaining independence.
