N Biren Singh said that 16 hectares of illicit poppy fields were destroyed.
Singh stated in X, “A joint force of Police, Forest & MR carried out a Poppy destruction drive at Tora Champhung Hill Range under Ukhrul district. 16 hectares of illicit poppy fields were destroyed, 20 huts burned, and other infrastructures such as pipeline connection, fertilizers, salt, herbicides, pesticides etc.
were destroyed as well. Meanwhile, on the 2nd day of joint poppy destruction drive by Police, Forest & MR at Phalee-Tora-Champhung Hill range in Ukhrul District, 25 huts were burned and 15 hectares of poppy plantation also destroyed.
The state government is intensifying its War on Drugs and will not stop until the drugs menace is completely rooted out from the state”.
Biren Singh earlier attributed it to illegal immigrants and drug lords involved in mass poppy cultivation and forest destruction, on which the state government will never compromise.
The state government earlier stated encroachment evictions from reserve forests and protected forests were done in the state to preserve forests, seeing the deteriorating climatic conditions of the world, the Manipur government said, adding it never targeted a particular community.
The state government had launched a tirade against illegal poppy cultivation by destroying poppy fields in forest land, especially in the reserve and protected forests in the hilly areas.
The enormity of the drug menace has reached such a height that out of the state’s population of 28 lakh, the number of drugs-affected youths is around 1.4 lakh.
