Maratha quota stir has dragged on to the twelfth day after Maratha leader Manoj Jarange Patil rejected the new proposed Government Resolution (GR) on the Maratha quota.
On Saturday Shiv Sena leader Arjun Khotkar, who is mediating on behalf of the Maharashtra government, met Patil sitting on a fast at the Antarvali village in Jalna district with a sealed envelope. The sealed envelope contained the new proposed GR on the Maratha reservations meant to placate the Maratha leader who has been on an indefinite fast since August 29.
The Maratha leader however 'rejected' the new proposed GR and said that his fast would continue.
«The new GR has not made any changes from the recently issued GR. We have asked for some more changes (in the proposed GR) and till then, our fast would continue,» said Patil.
While rejecting the GR, the Maratha leader said there were 'just some slight changes' he has asked to be incorporated in the new GR.
This is the second resolution on the Maratha quota that Jarange Patil has rejected.
Last Thursday, the Maharashtra government issued a GR which recognised Marathas in Marathwada as Kunbis (a sub caste of the Maratha community) but only if they have supporting documents enabling them to be eligible for reservations under the OBC category.
The Maratha leader rejected the GR claiming that it would not have any impact on the Maratha community in Marathwada as they didn't have any supporting documents to show they were Kunbis. Khotkar said the government was trying to evolve an alternative mechanism to resolve this issue but sought more time for the government.
Earlier in the day Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said the government is trying to resolve the issue under the 'constitutional framework.'
