ITV has secured the rights to broadcast the Oscars ceremony in the UK, thanks to a newly inked multi-year deal with Disney Entertainment. The Oscars will now find their home on ITV1 and the streaming platform ITVX.
As part of this agreement, upcoming Oscars events will be accessible across various ITV platforms, including ITV1, ITVX, ITVX social channels, and news and magazine shows.
This shift comes after two decades during which the Oscars were hosted on Sky, a pay-TV operator under Comcast's umbrella. Sky had gained the rights to air the ceremony in 2004 after a period during which the BBC and Sky alternated as hosts.
In August, it was announced that Sky, the largest pay-TV broadcaster in the UK, had relinquished its rights to the prestigious Hollywood awards show.
Darren Nartey, the senior acquisitions manager for ITV and ITVX, expressed excitement about exclusively bringing the Oscars to UK film enthusiasts, emphasizing their commitment to showcasing films across their network.
Nartey also highlighted ITVX's extensive library of over 250 feature films and their eagerness to share the year's most significant movie event with their audience.
Bill Kramer, CEO of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, conveyed his happiness about partnering with ITV to broadcast the Oscars to UK viewers. He underlined the global nature of the Oscars, recognizing films and artists from around the world, and praised ITV's dedication to the world of cinema.
The 96th Oscars ceremony is scheduled to occur on March 10, 2024.
