Maharashtra government reached with Maratha reservation activist Manoj Jarange Patil, a day after the pact.
While calling off his fast on Thursday, after 9 days that saw violence and arson in the state, Patil had said the state government agreed to affirmative action for all Marathas in the state in two months. The state government, however, indicated that it had only promised to complete the spadework for the quota in two months.
«If there is no blanket reservation for the entire community by December 24, we would reach Mumbai,» Patil told reporters on Friday.
The sense one got from the Maharashtra government, however, is that the two-month deadline was for the Justice Sandeep Shinde panel to complete work on finding historical evidence that Marathas were Kunbis, a community in the OBC list.
«In two months, most work needed for the Maratha quota would be done,» chief minister Eknath Shinde said on Thursday. He sidestepped a question on Patil's demand that the state extend reservation benefits to all Marathas in two months.
The CM said that Patil had told the government to get the Shinde committee to complete the process of finding evidence that Marathas were Kunbis and issue them OBC certificates in two months. No minister has said that the state would give all Marathas reservation in two months.
There is confusion even on the deadline.
