Mark Carney endorses Labour's Rachel Reeves as next UK chancellor

In a pre-recorded video shown at the Labour party's annual conference in Liverpool today (9 October), Carney, who served as the Bank's governor from 2013 to 2020, described Reeves as a «serious economist».

«She began her career at the Bank of England, so she understands the big picture,» he said. «But, crucially, she understands the economics of work, of place and family. And, look, it is beyond time we put her energy and ideas into action.»
In her speech, Reeves said Labour would «make the long term decisions and invest in British industry, driving down bills and creating new jobs», and noted that a Labour government would not «waver from ironclad fiscal rules».
