weight limits for their checked baggage as automated baggage drop machines have been introduced. The leeway previously provided by airline ground staff to accommodate minor variations in weight has been eliminated.
Even a mere 100 grams in excess of the stipulated weight can lead to inconveniences, as one woman discovered on Thursday, a TOI report stated.
The woman, a graphic designer from Delhi, who chose to remain anonymous, was traveling with two friends on a domestic flight to the national capital from Terminal 1 of KIA. When she approached the automatic baggage drop machine at the terminal, she realized that her bag weighed 15.1kg.
To her dismay, the staff operating the machine refused to accept her bag as it exceeded the allowed weight by 0.1kg.
Recalling the incident, the woman explained that she was forced to remove some items from her bag on the spot to reduce its weight by 100 grams. She also tried to request that the excess weight be adjusted with the bags of her friends, whose baggage was under the stipulated weight, as is usually done in the conventional baggage drop method.
However, the airline staff informed her that the automatic bag drop machine is calibrated specifically for 15kg bags and does not allow any adjustments with fellow passengers.
The woman, who was in Bengaluru to attend her graduation ceremony, expressed her embarrassment at the situation. She emphasized how the incident could have been avoided if there was flexibility in adjusting weight among passengers traveling under the same PNR.
