Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was put under house arrest yet again and not allowed to address the Friday congregation at Jama Masjid in downtown Srinagar. He termed the move «disconcerting and negative» and said he feared that he would be detained till the end of the assembly elections starting September 18.
He also alleged that in the runup to polls, youngsters are being harassed and summoned to local police stations for surety bonds.
«If our collective aim is peace and normalcy then resolution of the conflict is the way forward. Political engagement with the aspirations and sentiments of the people of J&K is the way forward, not apathy and force. Use of force, in fact, undermines it,» Mirwaiz said.
«Unfortunately, you are actually enforcing peace and normalcy by force and intimidating people into silence which in the long run is unsustainable.»
«I am allowed freedom of movement for a few weeks and then detained at home at the discretion of authorities, by placing a vehicle in front of my gate. Without giving any reason, I am simply informed that I can't move out,» said Mirwaiz.
Mirwaiz was put under house arrest on August 4, 2019, a day before the special status of J&K was abrogated and Jammu and Kashmir was downgraded into two Union Territories of J&K and Ladakh. He was released after more than four years on September 22, 2023.
