assembly polls will be postponed by a day to December 4. Initially scheduled for December 3, the counting will now commence at 8 am on Monday at 13 counting centers and 40 counting halls across the state.
Postal ballots will be counted first, followed by votes from EVMs.
Over 4,000 counting personnel will be involved, with 399 EVM tables and 56 postal ballot tables, according to officials. The decision to defer the counting date came after protests by members of the Mizoram NGO Coordination Committee (NGOCC), who sought a change due to it falling on a Sunday, a sacred day for the Christian-majority population.
In a press note, the Commission said that it has received several representations from various quarters requesting for change in date of counting from 3rd December, 2023 (Sunday) to some other week day, on the ground that 3rd December, 2023 being Sunday a special significance for the people of Mizoram.
«The Commission, having considered these representations, has decided to revise the date of counting for the General Election to the Legislative Assembly of Mizoram from 3rd December, 2023 (Sunday) to 4th December, 2023 (Monday).
