Trade Tensions: Finding Common Ground
Trade has long been a thorn in US-India relations. Trump, who has repeatedly called India a «tariff king,» has imposed high tariffs on steel and aluminium, affecting Indian businesses. India, in response, has cut duties on certain American goods such as high-end motorcycles and electric batteries in an effort to ease tensions ahead of Modi’s visit. Both leaders are expected to discuss a broader trade deal that could balance the playing field.
Beyond tariffs, Modi’s “Make in India” initiative is in direct contrast to Trump’s “America First” policy. The challenge will be finding ways to enhance economic cooperation without either side feeling short-changed.
