Monkey Man marks Dev Patel's first role as both director and screenwriter. Though Collee and Angunawela helped with the screenplay, the story came from Patel’s own ideas. Collee, known for Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, is also working on The Return, another upcoming historical film. While Patel has not announced his next directing project, he will appear in Rabbit Trap, a horror film starring alongside Rosy McEwen.
